Summary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hong Kong

Home page of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hong Kong website

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong is also called The Commissioner’s Office, and this is reflected in their very basic ministry website. Although Hong Kong is a very popular tourist destination, this is not visible in the ministry’s website as it hardly contains information pertinent to foreign travellers. It is available in English, simplified Chinese and traditional Chinese language settings. Its highlights include:

1.  Visa
The visa page offers very little information except for a disclaimer that says, “Visa applicants are increasing in a large number and need longer waiting time in the visa office recently. If you don’t reside or work in Hong Kong permanently, you are required to apply Chinese visafrom the Embassy or Consulate-General of Peoples’ Republic of China in your resident country. You are welcome to China for tourism, business and visit.”

2. Consular services
Surprisingly, the consular services page has been designed to serve only Hong Kong citizens and offers nothing to foreign travellers.

For information on travelling to Hong Kong, we would recommend the Discover Hong Kong website instead, which is a beautifully-designed website that helps you plan your trip by telling you all about the attractions, shopping, dining and touring opportunities, things to do, as well as the latest festivals and events. You may also find relevant travel information from their Immigration Department website.

Summary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Myanmar website

Home page of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Myanmar website

Myanmar is not a very popular tourist destination, as compared to other Southeast Asian countries, mainly due to the rule and oppression of the military junta. As such, tourism in this country is embroiled in controversy, and therefore there isn’t that much to talk about.

The country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs website mirrors this fact quite a bit, and although the website is only available in English, information for foreign travellers is scant. We did find some information that could be useful though:

1. Home page
The Ministry’s home page is quite basic and is dominated with their latest news. On the left sidebar of the website is a menu with the heading ‘About Myanmar,’ where you may find basic information on the nation’s geography, climate, population, economy etc.

2. Myanmar missions overseas
If you’re planning to visit Myanmar, you will need a pre-approval letter from the embassy. As such, this list of Myanmar missions overseas can prove to be useful.

3. Foreign embassies in Myanmar
If you’d like to know about the foreign embassies located in Myanmar, here’s a list for your reference.

4. List of Countries having Diplomatic Relations with the Union of Myanmar
If you’re wondering if your country has had any form of diplomatic relations with Myanmar, check out this page, they actually list it down!

5. Tourism
The page labelled ‘tourism’ only has a very brief paragraph encouraging people to visit Mnyanmar. There is no information or links to on Visas, or even a message to say that queries should be forwarded to a Myanmar mission. There are two types of tourist Visas that you can obtain from the consulate – the EVT Visa and the Package Tour Visa. In case you’d like to find out more about visas to Myanmar, here’s a helpful link.
