Indonesia visa extension in Java, Yogyakarta (Dec-2011)

Mist and stupas at Jogyakarta, Java

Java is an island of Indonesia. It is home to 60% of Indonesia’s population. Java offers everything that a somewhat adventurous traveller is looking for: two of world’s great ancient monuments, volcanoes (all 121 of them), major national parks, rainforests, tea and rice plantations, large cities, big waves and even a savanna. You can also extend your Indonesian visa there. A traveller nicknamed timdog had this to say on Thorntree (12-Dec-2011):

“I’ve not used the Yogya immigration office myself for an extension, but have spoken to people who have. They seem to be relatively “clean”, and i think the extension takes the standard three days. But according to reports they DO enforce the requirement for a sponsor for an extension of a 60-day visa (you shouldn’t need this to extend a VOA). There don’t seem to be any established professional agents in Yogya of the kind you find in Bali, but to be honest you don’t need the services of one. The immigration office is out near the airport (on the way to Prambanan).

If you are needing a sponsor, you could ask the people at your guesthouse. If they are unwilling, or you feel uncomfortable, then the next best bet would be to ask at one of the many travel agents, to get them to sponsor you. If you do do this I strongly recommend that you keep the upper hand and handle the process yourself.

Go out to the office yourself and get the forms and ask about the requirements, and then simply ask the sponsor to provide whatever is required from them (a completed form with a materai stamp, a photocopy of their ID card, and in some immigration offices, and sort of standard sponsors’ letter).

If you do go to a travel agent for this, when negociating what you’re going to pay for their help bear in mind that the cost of an extension is Rp250,000. Don’t give in to the temptation of letting a non-specialist travel agent handle the process for you. You’ll get absolutely scalped on the fee, and they may well f*$% up the process, as they will probably have no more idea than you how it works!”
